A circular walk of 11 miles with a party of ten SC Ramblers. We walked from HF Harrington House in Bourton on the Water along the River Windrush to Naunton then on to Upper and Lower Slaughter along The Warden’s Way. From Lower Slaughter we follow a short stretch of The Heart of England Way back to our starting point.
In Naughton we visited St Andrew’s Church (15th Century). The Palm Sunday Service had ended and as the last few parishioners were leaving, they invited us in to view their church and offered us Palm Crosses. The village has had no shops since 1999 but does have a pub The Black Horse Inn. As we were nearing the pub it started to rain so we took shelter there and enjoyed their coffees.
As soon as the rain had stopped, we were on our way along The Wardens Way to visit The Slaughters. Before too long we experienced another shower of rain but this time no convenient shelter. The shower did not last long and we didn’t experience any more rain after that.
We followed the footpath along the River Eye between the two delightful villages where there are pretty little riverside cottages, stone footbridges, old watermills and picturesque village greens. It's a beautiful area with the 19th-century water mill in Lower Slaughter one of the highlights of the walk. The final section of the route follows part of the Heart of England way south from Lower Slaughter back to Bourton-on-the-Water.
