Sutton Coldfield Ramblers

On 26th July  there was the coach trip to Welshpool. The coach was full and two walks were offered.

1. Long walk -  8.5 miles

A moderate linear walk of around 8.5 miles starting in the village of Brockton following routes over the Long Mountain and finishing at the Canal Centre in Welshpool. The walk  initially followed the Cross Britain Way onto the Long Mountain. It met up with Offas Dyke at Beacon Ring fort where there are spectacular views across the Severn Valley overlooking Welshpool. The descent into Welshpool follows the Montgomery Canal into the town centre. Good tracks on all the route.

2. Medium  walk - 7 miles

A moderate circular walk of around 7 miles. The walk started in Welshpool, walking up the High Street to join Glyndwr's Way. Passing the historic Llanerchydol Hall, there is a gradual ascent offering lovely views, firstly on a tarmac lane which becomes a track and then a grassy path. Then a fairly steep descent to Barn Farm, then along A458 for 400 m, then turning right along a lane, crossing  the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway and after 600 m turning left  along a farm track to Upper Talyrnau. The route then follows paths and lanes back to Welshpool, passing through woods and over very rough grassland, with impressive views of the surrounding countryside.

 2. Short  walk - 4.7 miles

An easy leisurely circular walk of around 5.0 miles. The walk started from the car park near the Canal Centre in the middle of the town and followed the Montgomery canal towards Newtown. At Belan Locks, walkers left the canal and followed the public footpath towards Powys Castle where time could be spent enjoying the scenery and the cafe (NT members could access the castle and gardens). The return to Welshpool followed good tracks back to the High Street and the car park. Total ascent and descent of around 100 feet.
